The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) on Thursday held a candlelight vigil in Manipur, demanding justice for two Naga civilians killed in a recent ambush. The event, organised at Naga Solidarity Park under the theme “We Rise Together: Unbreakable, Unafraid,” served as a tribute and a collective call against violence.

The victims, Chinaoshang Shokwungnao of Tushar village and Yaruingam Vashum of Kharasom village, were killed on April 18 when suspected militants opened fire on a civilian convoy along NH-202 in the T M Kasom area of Ukhrul district. The attack has intensified concerns over civilian safety in the region.

Addressing the gathering, NSF president Mteisuding said the vigil symbolised not just grief but a unified stand against injustice , adding that the Naga community shares the pain of the bereaved families. He alleged that such incidents point to a pattern of targeted violence against Nagas .

Contextually , the incident comes amid ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur , where sporadic clashes, arson, and intimidation have been reported, particularly in hill districts inhabited by Naga communities. These recurring episodes have heightened insecurity and strained inter-community relations.

The NSF has demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the ambush and called for enhanced security measures to protect civilians travelling through vulnerable areas. It also stated that it has submitted a memorandum to the United Nations Human Rights Council, alleging a “systematic and coordinated pattern of aggression” against Nagas.

The federation urged both state and central authorities to take urgent steps to ensure accountability, prevent further violence, and restore public confidence in affected regions.
