London-based doctor and popular YouTuber Sangram Patil was detained at Mumbai International Airport on Saturday morning in connection with a defamation case filed by BJP media cell functionary Nikhil Bhamre , a police official said.

Patil, originally from Maharashtra and currently a British citizen , was questioned along with his wife for several hours by crime branch officials. He was later released after receiving a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) , which allows police to issue a notice of appearance instead of arrest for offences with shorter jail terms.

The case pertains to allegations that Sangram Patil spread false information about the ruling party and made derogatory remarks against BJP leaders , posting objectionable content from two Facebook accounts, one of which allegedly belonged to him. The complaint claims that such content could incite hostility and animosity among different sections of society . In India, defamation is recognised as one of the “reasonable restrictions” on the freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(2) of the Constitution , allowing legal action to protect the reputation of individuals or groups. Investigations into the matter have been ongoing since the complaint was filed last month at the N M Joshi Marg police station.

Police officials said the investigation may continue with scrutiny of Patil’s social media posts, collection of witness statements, and expert verification of the content . Following the investigation, a chargesheet could be filed in court , after which the court may issue a summons and schedule hearings . Patil could respond to the allegations, seek anticipatory bail, or challenge the case legally.

Depending on the outcome, the case could result in acquittal, settlement, or a trial leading to conviction . Authorities emphasized that, although Patil is a foreign national , he is subject to Indian law since the alleged offence occurred in India. All legal procedures will follow due protocol , including safeguarding his rights and ensuring compliance with Indian and international norms.
