Novak Djokovic Breaks Roger Federer's Wimbledon Record, Storms Into Quarterfinals
Novak Djokovic etched his name deeper into Wimbledon history on Sunday by registering his 106th match victory at the All England Club, surpassing Roger Federer's long standing men's record and booking his place in the quarterfinals for the 17th time .
The seven time Wimbledon champion was pushed hard by world No. 132 qualifier Roman Safiullin , eventually securing a 7-6 (6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory after more than three hours of intense tennis. While Djokovic crossed another historic milestone, the match also exposed areas he believes need improvement as he continues his quest for a record equalling eighth Wimbledon title .
The opening set proved especially challenging for the 39 year old Serbian , who found himself trailing 5-2 and had to save two set points before forcing a tiebreak. He eventually claimed the set on his third opportunity, shifting the momentum in his favour.
However, the contest remained far from straightforward. Djokovic was broken early in the third set and received a warning from the chair umpire after shouting in frustration. He later lost the set and was briefly booed by spectators after hitting the ball away in disappointment.
Following the match, Djokovic admitted he had struggled emotionally during the contest and apologized for his visible frustration.
He also revealed that he deliberately altered his tactics, choosing to approach the net more frequently instead of engaging in long baseline rallies with Safiullin , whose aggressive groundstrokes troubled the veteran champion.
The strategy paid off in the fourth set as Djokovic raced to a 3-0 lead before comfortably serving out the match to love. He will next face the winner of the clash between Felix Auger Aliassime and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a place in the semifinals.
In the women's singles, defending champion Barbora Krejcikova was knocked out by fellow Czech Karolina Muchova in a hard fought 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 battle. Her defeat guarantees that Wimbledon will crown a new women's singles champion for the ninth consecutive edition .
Meanwhile, fourth seed Jessica Pegula recovered from a slow start to defeat fellow American Iva Jovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, advancing to the quarterfinals.
