Lionel Messi has firmly dismissed accusations that Argentina received favourable treatment during their march to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final , insisting the reigning champions have earned every success through resilience, quality and determination.

Speaking after Argentina's dramatic 2-1 semifinal victory over England , Messi responded to growing criticism surrounding refereeing decisions and allegations that the football establishment has favoured La Albiceleste throughout the tournament.

"We've been the best over these past four years, whether people like it or not," Messi said. "Nothing was handed to us."

Argentina produced yet another stunning comeback in the semifinal, overturning a 1-0 deficit in the closing minutes before sealing victory to book a blockbuster final against Spain . It was the latest in a series of remarkable recoveries, having previously fought through extra-time wins over Cape Verde and Switzerland , while also rallying from 2-0 down to defeat Egypt 3-2 .

Those victories, however, have sparked debate. Officials from Egypt and Switzerland questioned key refereeing decisions, with Egypt alleging biased officiating in Argentina's favour. Social media has also been flooded with claims that FIFA has given Messi's side an easier path to defend its world title.

Argentina's camp has consistently rejected those allegations. Head coach Lionel Scaloni reiterated that modern football, with the assistance of VAR , leaves little room for manipulation.

"With VAR today, it's very difficult to get help. We knew there was no help," Scaloni said, brushing aside suggestions of favoritism.

Messi stressed that reaching two consecutive World Cup finals is proof of the team's consistency rather than luck.

Midfielder Enzo Fernandez also admitted his goal celebration against England was directed at the team's critics, saying months of accusations had fuelled the players' emotions.

Argentina's victory celebrations have also sparked political debate after players posed with a banner supporting Argentina's claim over the Malvinas (Falkland Islands) , prompting calls from the British government for FIFA to examine the incident.

Despite the controversies on and off the field, Argentina now stands one win away from retaining the World Cup , with Messi determined to let performances, not criticism, define his team's legacy.
