As tensions escalate in West Asia with global implications, the Centre on Wednesday convened a crucial all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh , bringing together leaders from across the political spectrum. Prominent Opposition figures, including Mallikarjun Kharge , Tariq Anwar , and John Brittas , attended the meeting, which saw participation from around 40–45 parties. However, the absence of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Trinamool Congress drew sharp criticism from the government.

The meeting focused on assessing the impact of the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Iran and Israel on India’s security, economy and citizens abroad. Senior ministers including Amit Shah , S. Jaishankar , Nirmala Sitharaman , and Kiren Rijiju were present, while Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri provided a detailed briefing.

The Centre reassured leaders that India’s energy security remains stable, with sufficient oil reserves and diversified imports from over 40 countries. It also highlighted ongoing monitoring of maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, where some vessels remain stranded amid heightened tensions. Ensuring the safety of Indian nationals in the Gulf region was identified as a top priority.

During the discussions, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made it clear that India would not act as a mediator, asserting that the country is “not a broker nation like Pakistan.” The government reiterated its policy of strategic autonomy, maintaining balanced ties with major global powers without direct intervention. It was also conveyed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged US President Donald Trump to push for an early resolution to the conflict.

Despite the briefing, Opposition leaders expressed dissatisfaction, calling for greater clarity and a detailed parliamentary discussion. While differences persist, parties indicated support for the government in protecting national interests, as India navigates a complex and evolving geopolitical landscape.
