Norway Chess leads bold new initiative

In a landmark move set to reshape the chess landscape, the organisers of Norway Chess have announced the launch of the Total Chess World Championship Tour, a new global series that will unite three formats Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz under a single competitive banner.

The ambitious project, developed in collaboration with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), aims to identify the most versatile chess player in the world. Scheduled to debut officially in 2027, the tour will feature four tournaments every year across major international cities, culminating in the crowning of the FIDE World Combined Champion.

According to Norway Chess CEO Kjell Madland, the initiative represents a long-term commitment to modernising competitive chess while preserving its classical roots. “We expect the Total Chess World Championship Tour to become one of the most prestigious events in the entire chess calendar,” Madland said, following the official signing of a multi-year agreement with FIDE earlier this month.

While the existing World Chess Championship contested solely in the classical format will continue, the new Tour introduces a broader, performance-based challenge. “This will be a complementary championship that rewards consistency and skill across all three time formats,” Madland explained.

The Total Chess World Championship Tour will feature an annual prize pool of at least USD 2.7 million, including USD 750,000 each for the first three events and USD 450,000 for the season finale, alongside performance bonuses. A pilot event is planned for late 2026 before the inaugural full season launches the following year.

At the heart of the innovation is the introduction of Fast Classic, a modified version of traditional chess with shorter time controls capped at 45 minutes per player designed to bridge the gap between classical and rapid play.

Madland said the vision is clear: “The Total Chess World Championship Tour will determine the ultimate all-rounder in world chess, a player who can master the precision of classical, the speed of rapid, and the intensity of blitz.”

With FIDE’s official backing and Norway Chess’s global reputation for innovation, the new Tour could mark the next major evolution in professional chess, one that blends tradition with the excitement of faster, more dynamic formats.
