Northeast Milestone: Arunachal and Mizoram Mark Statehood Day

The northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram on Friday celebrated their 39th Statehood Day , marking nearly four decades since they were granted full statehood on February 20, 1987 . The day commemorates a defining moment in India’s federal journey, when both states transitioned from Union Territories to full-fledged states, strengthening democratic governance and regional empowerment in the Northeast.

Arunachal Pradesh , often called the “Land of the Rising Sun,” was earlier known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) and became a Union Territory in 1972 before attaining statehood in 1987. Its elevation to statehood was significant not only for administrative autonomy but also for reinforcing India’s strategic presence along its borders with China, Bhutan and Myanmar. Over the decades, the state has witnessed improvements in infrastructure, connectivity and socio-economic development while preserving its vibrant tribal traditions and ecological heritage.

Mizoram’s path to statehood was shaped by the historic Mizo Peace Accord signed on June 30, 1986, between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front. The accord ended years of insurgency and laid the foundation for lasting peace, political stability and constitutional safeguards protecting the state’s customary laws and land rights. Statehood marked the beginning of a new chapter focused on reconciliation, development and democratic participation.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to the people of both states, highlighting their scenic beauty, cultural richness and patriotic spirit. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his wishes, commending the people for their contribution to national security, unity and inclusive growth.

In the capitals of Itanagar and Aizawl, official ceremonies and cultural programmes marked the celebrations, with leaders paying tribute to visionaries and peacebuilders who paved the way for statehood and stability. As the two states complete 39 years within the Indian Union, the day stands as a reminder of their transformation into vibrant contributors to India’s democratic framework and national development.
