North Zone DCP reviews welfare measures for transgender community

A meeting was held at the North Zone DCP office to discuss issues faced by the transgender community, their welfare, and measures to maintain public safety in the city. Around 25 members of the transgender community attended the meeting to voice their concerns.

They highlighted challenges such as social discrimination, lack of acceptance, limited employment opportunities, delays in issuing ID cards and transgender certificates, and difficulties accessing government welfare and housing schemes.

The meeting also addressed public complaints about disruptions caused by some individuals from the community during social events and celebrations. Allegations of harassment and illegal extortion were discussed, with the DCP clarifying the police stance on such issues.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police emphasized the need to provide skill development training, self-employment opportunities, and dignified livelihood options for the transgender community. He assured that genuine concerns would be taken to the relevant government departments for resolution. Measures would also be taken to expedite the issuance of ID cards, certificates, and ensure smooth access to welfare schemes.

However, the DCP made it clear that any illegal activities, including harassment or extortion, would not be tolerated, and strict legal action would follow if such incidents continue.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to maintain ongoing dialogue with the transgender community, promote lawful employment opportunities, safeguard public peace, and ensure respect and protection of rights for all.
