North Korea demonstrates strike power from new 5,000-ton destroyer
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw fresh missile launches from the country’s new 5,000-ton destroyer Choe Hyon , state media reported, highlighting Pyongyang’s push to strengthen its naval nuclear capabilities .
According to the Korean Central News Agency, the warship fired two strategic cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles on Sunday. The cruise missiles flew for over two hours , while the anti-ship missiles remained airborne for more than 30 minutes , reportedly hitting designated targets in the western seas.
The Choe Hyon , unveiled in 2025, is designed to carry a range of advanced weapons, including nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles . Kim described the vessel as key to expanding the military’s operational reach and preemptive strike capability . He also reiterated his commitment to the “limitless expansion” of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal and reviewed plans for additional destroyers under construction.
The tests are part of a broader series of weapons trials amid rising tensions and stalled diplomacy . Talks between Pyongyang and Washington have remained frozen since the collapse of negotiations with the U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019.
South Korea condemned the launches as a serious security threat , while the United States called for a return to dialogue , warning that such actions violate UN resolutions. Japan expressed concern over regional instability .
China urged restraint and dialogue , while Russia has remained largely silent, despite deepening ties with Pyongyang .
With continued missile development and naval expansion, North Korea’s actions are raising fresh concerns over security and stability in East Asia.
