In a massive shake-up to the 2026 summer movie calendar, Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated epic The Odyssey has reportedly locked down every IMAX screen across the globe for an exclusive run from July 17 to August 14, 2026. The move, typical of Nolan’s long-standing partnership with IMAX, has sent ripples through the industry especially for Marvel Studios, whose upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day was slated to release during the same period.

Nolan, known for his visually grand storytelling and commitment to large-format filmmaking, has once again secured his dominance over IMAX exhibition. Following the massive success of Oppenheimer in 2023 which ran in IMAX for weeks and grossed nearly $1 billion globally theaters are betting big on The Odyssey , a retelling of Homer’s legendary tale through Nolan’s signature cinematic lens.

However, this IMAX monopoly leaves Spider-Man: Brand New Day , one of Marvel’s biggest releases of 2026, with a major setback. Without access to IMAX screens, the superhero blockbuster will be limited to standard formats, potentially affecting both its marketing push and box office performance.

Industry insiders suggest that Marvel and Sony Pictures are now weighing their options including a possible release date shift to avoid competing head-to-head with Nolan’s juggernaut. “No studio wants to go up against Nolan in IMAX. It’s his territory now,” said one distribution executive. “Marvel will have to think strategically about where and when they want Spider-Man to swing into theaters.”

Fans have also taken to social media, debating whether Marvel should stand its ground or move the release to late August or early September. Given the massive IMAX-driven buzz Nolan’s films usually generate, many believe a delay might be the smarter move to give Spider-Man: Brand New Day the spotlight it deserves.

As of now, neither Marvel nor Sony has officially commented on a potential change. But one thing is clear the battle for summer 2026’s box office crown just got a lot more interesting, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey may once again redefine how studios plan their release calendars around IMAX availability.
