Noel Tata, key trustees block Mehli mistry’s reappointment at Tata Trusts
In a development that highlights growing internal tensions within Tata Trusts, Chairman Noel Tata and two influential trustees have reportedly opposed the reappointment of Mehli Mistry, a long-time confidant of the late industrialist Ratan Tata, as trustee. The decision, made during a recent board meeting, is seen as a key turning point in the leadership and governance of the philanthropic organisation that controls the majority stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the $150 billion Tata Group.
According to people familiar with the matter, Noel Tata who took charge of Tata Trusts after Ratan Tata’s death last year joined hands with Venu Srinivasan, Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor Company, and Vijay Singh, former Defence Secretary, to vote against Mistry’s reappointment at the end of his three-year term on Tuesday. The move effectively ends Mistry’s tenure and underscores a shift in power dynamics at the Trusts.
Mehli Mistry, who shared a close personal and professional bond with Ratan Tata, had long been regarded as a trusted aide and a key advisor in group affairs. His exit marks a symbolic break from the old guard that had shaped the Trust’s functioning under Ratan Tata’s stewardship. Insiders say the development reflects Noel Tata’s growing influence and a possible attempt to redefine the Trust’s internal structure and strategic priorities.
Tata Trusts, which collectively own around 66% of Tata Sons, play a crucial role in steering the group’s charitable, social, and business initiatives. The differences over Mistry’s reappointment have now cast a spotlight on internal realignments that could influence decision-making at one of India’s most powerful corporate and philanthropic entities.
Observers believe that while the move may consolidate Noel Tata’s leadership, it could also trigger further divisions within the Trust’s board in the coming months.
