Jackson Suber announced himself on golf's biggest stage with a sensational 5-under 65 to take the first-round lead at the 2026 British Open at Royal Birkdale , capping a remarkable debut on links golf.

The 26-year-old American , playing in just his third major championship and making his British Open debut , produced a fearless display on a demanding course. Suber saved par brilliantly at the challenging 15th before sinking a birdie on the 16th. He then thrilled spectators with a superb 6-foot eagle putt after striking a brilliant 4-iron from 233 yards at the 17th to finish atop the leaderboard.

Suber, who is still searching for his first professional victory, held a one-shot lead over Sungjae Im and England's Dan Brown , while a group of players, including Bryson DeChambeau , Cameron Young , Robert MacIntyre , Thomas Detry and Francesco Molinari , finished at 3-under 67 .

DeChambeau silenced criticism over his links-course strategy by producing an impressive opening round despite hitting only four fairways. His aggressive approach kept him firmly in contention, although a bogey on the final hole denied him a share of the lead.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler looked set for an even lower score after racing to four birdies in his opening six holes. However, missed opportunities over the closing stretch left him with a solid 2-under 68 , keeping him within striking distance heading into the second round.

It proved to be a frustrating day for Rory McIlroy , who struggled with the putter, missing three short putts and carding an even-par 72 after six bogeys.
