Iran’s imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate , Narges Mohammadi , has been urgently hospitalised following a serious cardiac crisis , sparking renewed global concern over her treatment and the broader issue of human rights in Iran . The 53-year-old activist was transferred from prison in Zanjan to a specialised medical facility after reportedly suffering multiple episodes of unconsciousness and dangerously unstable blood pressure .

According to her foundation and legal representatives, the transfer came only after her condition became life-threatening , following what has been described as over 140 days of systematic medical neglect . Mohammadi is believed to have suffered a heart attack in March , after which she continued to experience chest pain and breathing difficulties without adequate access to specialised care. Her family has warned that the hospitalisation may be a last-minute intervention , raising fears about potential long-term damage.

Narges Mohammadi , a prominent human rights activist, journalist, and lawyer , was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy for women’s rights , abolition of the death penalty , and democratic freedoms in Iran . She has spent much of the past decade in and out of prison due to her activism and criticism of the Iranian government.

Her current imprisonment stems from security-related charges , including “propaganda against the state” and “collusion against national security.” She was re-arrested in December 2025 and later sentenced to an additional seven years in prison by a Revolutionary Court, which critics say offers limited scope for fair defence.

Mohammadi has also been a vocal supporter of protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, a case that triggered widespread demonstrations against morality policing and state restrictions . Her activism, including documenting abuses in prison, has made her a symbol of resistance both within Iran and internationally.

The Nobel Committee and several global rights organisations have condemned her treatment as “life-threatening” , calling for immediate medical care and, in some cases, her release. As her condition remains critical, her case continues to draw attention to the treatment of political prisoners and the state of civil liberties in Iran .
