Against the backdrop of an active war and a freshly brokered ceasefire, Russia held a markedly scaled-back Victory Day parade on Red Square on May 9 , marking the 81st anniversary of the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, but with a level of pomp nowhere near what the occasion traditionally commands.

For the first time since 2008 , the parade featured no display of heavy military hardware whatsoever, no tanks, no missiles, no armoured columns rolling through the square. Instead, a 45-minute event screened pre-recorded videos of Russian military equipment deployed to Ukraine , with the understood rationale being that tanks are needed at the front, not at a parade. The footage showcased drone and air defence forces, as well as strategic assets including long-range bombers and nuclear-capable submarines . Fighter planes conducted a flyover above the Kremlin, while soldiers marched in formation in front of Lenin's mausoleum.

The parade was attended by Russian military units as well as soldiers from North Korea , underscoring Moscow's deepening wartime alliances. The guest list was notably thinner than in previous years - a stark contrast to 2025, when China's Xi Jinping joined dozens of world leaders. This year, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, and Laos' President Thongloun Sisoulith were among those present.

Most international press were barred from attending, with CNN and other accredited journalists told by the Kremlin they could no longer cover the event , leaving the world largely reliant on Russian state media footage.

In his address, Putin declared "Victory has always been and will be ours," invoking the Soviet triumph to rally support for what he continues to call a "special military operation." He described his forces as confronting "an aggressive force armed and supported by the entire NATO bloc," framing the war as a righteous continuation of Russia's historic struggle.

Russian authorities had earlier threatened a "massive missile strike on the centre of Kyiv" if Ukraine attempted to disrupt the festivities, though the Trump-brokered ceasefire held the situation in check. Both the Ukrainian Air Force and the Russian Defence Ministry reported fewer drone attacks overnight , a rare, if fragile, moment of relative quiet in a war now into its fifth devastating year .
