No Refillable Bottles at World Cup Stadiums: FIFA's Last Minute Rule Sparks Fan Backlash

Just days before the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off across the United States, Canada and Mexico , football's governing body has sparked controversy by banning fans from bringing reusable water bottles into stadiums.

The decision comes despite growing concerns over extreme summer temperatures expected during the month-long tournament. Several host cities are likely to experience temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius , making hydration a major concern for spectators.

Until recently, FIFA's stadium rules allowed fans to carry transparent refillable bottles of up to one litre. However, an updated Stadium Code of Conduct now states that reusable water bottles will not be permitted inside any of the tournament's 16 venues.

The move has drawn criticism from supporters' groups, including England fan organisation Free Lions , which said FIFA had previously assured fans that free drinking water and refill stations would be available throughout the tournament.

Many supporters have questioned the timing of the change, with some suggesting it could increase spending on beverages sold inside stadiums. Drinks at World Cup venues are supplied through FIFA's long standing partnership with Coca-Cola , adding to the debate.

FIFA has defended the policy, saying the restriction is based on security concerns. According to the governing body, reusable bottles could potentially be thrown and used as projectiles, posing risks to players, officials and spectators.

To address heat related concerns, FIFA says stadiums will feature hydration stations, misting areas, cooling tents and fans to help spectators cope with high temperatures. Officials have also introduced mandatory three minute drinks breaks during matches to protect players from extreme heat.

The issue has prompted discussions between FIFA and U.S. authorities, with officials seeking a balance between fan safety, security and access to drinking water .

With the opening match fast approaching, the bottle ban has become an unexpected flashpoint, placing FIFA under pressure to convince fans that comfort and safety remain top priorities at football's biggest tournament.
