No Power Cuts in Punjab from Next Year: Kejriwal

Residents of Punjab may soon bid farewell to power cuts, as AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday promised that the state will have uninterrupted electricity supply by next summer. The announcement came during the foundation-laying ceremony of a new power transmission and distribution unit in Jalandhar, attended by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Kejriwal described the new unit as a state-of-the-art facility designed to modernize the power grid, reduce technical losses, and ensure faster, more reliable electricity distribution across both urban and rural areas. Equipped with high-capacity transformers and advanced monitoring systems, the unit is expected to play a key role in stabilizing supply during peak demand.

“Ninety per cent of people in Punjab already enjoy free electricity,” Kejriwal said. Farmers currently receive at least eight hours of guaranteed irrigation power, and the government plans to extend it to round-the-clock supply. “We are moving toward 24-hour electricity for every household and farm,” he added.

The ambitious plan includes laying 25,000 km of new power cables, installing 8,000 transformers, and establishing 77 new sub-stations across the state. Experts say these upgrades, combined with smart grid technologies, could drastically reduce outages and transmission losses, benefiting both homes and industries.

Kejriwal also criticized previous administrations for years of neglect in the power sector. “For decades, the transmission and distribution network was ignored, leaving the state vulnerable to frequent outages,” he said.

While the goal is technically achievable, challenges remain. Peak agricultural demand, financial constraints due to subsidized power, and potential delays in infrastructure completion could affect full implementation. Still, the government’s upgrades mark a major step toward modernizing Punjab’s energy sector, and residents can look forward to a brighter, uninterrupted future in the coming year.
