Proxgy, an Internet of Things (IoT) startup, has unveiled ThumbPay, a biometric payment device designed to facilitate secure, cardless, and cashless transactions using Aadhaar-based authentication. The device integrates the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), allowing users to make payments using their thumb impressions without the need for smartphones, debit cards, or physical wallets.

The device is aimed at enhancing financial inclusion by providing a simple, secure, and accessible payment solution for users in both urban and rural areas. To complete a transaction, a customer simply places their thumb on the device, which verifies their identity through AEPS. The linked UPI system then processes the bank-to-bank transfer seamlessly, eliminating the need for QR codes or cash handling.

Key features of ThumbPay include:

• Biometric Authentication: Uses fingerprint scanning to verify the identity of the user.

• Connectivity Options: Supports 4G, Wi-Fi, and LoRaWAN, ensuring reliable functionality even in areas with limited internet access.

• Versatile Payments: In addition to UPI, the device supports QR and NFC-based payments, making it adaptable to different merchant setups.

• Hygiene Measures: Equipped with UV sterilization, maintaining device cleanliness during frequent use.

• Multi-functionality: Functions as a UPI soundbox, providing audio confirmations for completed transactions.

Priced at under ₹2,000, ThumbPay is designed to be affordable for small shops, local merchants, and rural markets. It operates on battery power, enhancing portability and usability in areas with limited electricity access. The device has completed pilot trials and is currently awaiting compliance approvals from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Proxgy plans a phased rollout in collaboration with banks and fintech firms once regulatory clearances are received.

Experts say ThumbPay could significantly impact digital payments in India, particularly among users without access to smartphones or traditional banking tools. By leveraging existing digital infrastructure such as Aadhaar and UPI, the device aligns with India’s vision of a digital economy while promoting financial inclusion and transaction security.
