No Permission for Reservation Reform Protest at Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police Warn

Delhi Police on Sunday said no permission had been granted to any individual or organisation to hold a protest or public gathering at Jantar Mantar over reservation reforms, warning citizens not to assemble on the basis of misleading social media posts and videos.

The clarification came after several posts and videos circulated online, calling on people to gather at the iconic protest site in central Delhi on Sunday.

Police said prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) are already in force across the New Delhi district. Under the restrictions, protest marches, processions, demonstrations and assemblies involving five or more people are prohibited in the area.

In a public advisory, Delhi Police urged citizens to avoid gathering at Jantar Mantar in response to unverified messages circulating on social media. People were also asked not to forward, share or amplify content whose authenticity has not been established.

The police warned that those found creating or spreading fake or misleading information could face appropriate legal action.

The advisory comes amid the rapid spread of social media posts that can often trigger confusion and draw crowds before authorities are able to verify the authenticity of the information. With restrictions already in place, police have sought to make it clear that no authorised protest over reservation reforms is scheduled at Jantar Mantar.

Authorities appealed to the public to rely only on official and verified information, while cautioning against reacting to viral posts without checking their source.

The warning also underlines the potential legal consequences of ignoring prohibitory orders, as Delhi Police moves to prevent any unauthorised gathering and maintain public order in the high-security New Delhi district.
