No Municipality Left Behind: Parties Aim to Fly Their Flag Everywhere
The release of the Municipal Election Schedule has sharply heated up Telangana politics . Major parties Congress , BRS , and BJP have intensified campaigns across 2,996 wards in 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations , aiming to dominate every town and ward.
Parties view the elections as politically crucial , believing urban voters will judge the government’s performance . Campaigns are centred on development , welfare , and urban infrastructure , with issues such as drinking water , roads , drainage , sanitation , and tax burden taking centre stage.
Though municipal polls usually focus on local issues , analysts say they could influence the direction of state politics . The role of young voters and the urban middle class is seen as decisive, with employment , business opportunities , and urban planning shaping voter choices.
Congress Eyes Urban Gains
For the ruling Congress , the elections are crucial . The party aims to extend its Assembly and Panchayat election success into urban areas by converting support for its ‘Six Guarantees’ and welfare schemes into votes. Party leaders have warned that poor results will reflect on ministers and MLAs .
BRS Seeks Comeback
The BRS is banking on its urban development record , highlighting initiatives like Mission Bhagiratha , model markets , and Vaikuntha Dhamams . Under K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) , the party is focused on regaining control of Hyderabad and securing the Hyderabad Mayor’s post , aiming for a strong showing in Greater Hyderabad .
BJP Targets Urban Voters
After weaker results in rural polls, the BJP is concentrating on its urban voter base . Buoyed by its Lok Sabha election performance, the party plans to project Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development agenda and ‘Viksit Bharat’ , targeting key municipalities, including Hyderabad .
Voter Verdict Awaited
With nominations from January 28 , polling on February 11 , and results on February 13 , all eyes are on the urban voter to decide which party emerges on top.
