No Gas Shortage in Telangana: Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy

Telangana’s Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has clarified that there is no shortage of cooking gas in the state, and consumers need not worry. On Friday, from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Secretariat, the Minister, along with Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao , held a video conference with district collectors, SPs, and police commissioners. The meeting reviewed LPG supply and summer drinking water preparedness under the “ Praja Governance–Progress Plan .”

The government stated that Telangana has a strong LPG distribution system. The state has approximately 1.29 crore domestic LPG connections , served by 810 distributors . Daily LPG demand in the state is around 2.5 lakh cylinders , of which domestic consumption accounts for 86% , and commercial use only 14% , officials said.

Officials confirmed there is no disruption at any LPG bottling plants. They added that over 90% of domestic demand has been continuously met in recent times. Minister Reddy said the supply chain is functioning smoothly, with new stocks regularly arriving in the state.

He further stated that 10,611 metric tonnes of gas are currently available, equivalent to about 6.97 lakh cylinders , urging consumers not to engage in panic bookings. He clarified that reports of an LPG shortage are false and assured that cooking gas supply continues normally, with no cause for public concern.

The Minister directed officials to ensure uninterrupted LPG supply to domestic consumers, hospitals, and government hostels. He also instructed authorities to prevent misinformation about shortages and take strict action against any black-marketing. The supply system should function efficiently so that consumers do not face any inconvenience.

Reiterating the stability of the supply system, the Minister urged consumers to book cylinders only according to actual need and avoid unnecessary panic. The government emphasised that LPG supply in the state remains fully under control.

To streamline gas distribution, Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao provided key guidelines to officials. He instructed daily reviews of LPG supply and deployment of police vigilance at gas agencies to prevent illegal storage or black-market sales. In line with national guidelines, the minimum booking gap has been set at 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas , reducing misuse of cylinders, officials said.

The review meeting was attended by Civil Supplies Commissioner Stephen Ravindra , Principal Secretary of Water Resources Sridhar , and other senior officials. The Minister also advised proactive measures to prevent summer drinking water shortages.

Special coordination committees have been established at state and district levels to strengthen LPG monitoring. At the state level, the State-Level LPG Supply Coordination Committee , chaired by the Chief Secretary, continuously oversees storage, distribution, and compliance. District-level committees, led by collectors, review daily supply status, with representatives from the Civil Supplies Department, police, and Oil Marketing Companies working in coordination.

To ensure transparency in cylinder delivery, an OTP-based verification system is being implemented. Consumers receive an OTP on their registered mobile numbers when cylinders are delivered, which must be shared with delivery personnel to receive the cylinder. Officials said this reduces the possibility of unauthorised transfers.

The government has also taken strict action against black-marketing, hoarding, and illegal cylinder exchanges, registering multiple cases under the Essential Commodities Act. District authorities have been advised to conduct surprise inspections of distributor centres and cancel licenses if regulations are violated.

Despite the government’s assurance of sufficient supply, social media rumours have recently led to a sudden increase in cylinder bookings. Kalluri Jagan Mohan Reddy , President of the Telangana LPG Distributors Association, stated that consumers booking large numbers at once has put pressure on the supply system, with some distributor centres facing technical and operational issues.
