‘No Clarity, Only Conspiracy’: M.K. Stalin targets centre over delimitation move

M.K. Stalin on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government of “secretively” pursuing plans for delimitation and amendments related to women’s reservation , alleging a larger political conspiracy ahead of key elections.

Addressing a poll rally, Stalin claimed that while pressing public issues such as LPG shortages continue to affect citizens, the Centre is attempting to divert attention by fast-tracking sensitive constitutional changes. “As they secretively work on this matter, it is clear that there is a conspiracy to it,” he alleged.

Referring to the proposed exercise, the Chief Minister said delimitation could become a major constitutional amendment , but criticised the Centre for what he described as a lack of transparency . “The Union government has not explained how it plans to carry out the process. It has also not responded to any of the questions raised,” he said, urging greater clarity on the issue.

The remarks come amid ongoing political debates over delimitation/redrawing of parliamentary and assembly constituencies based on population changes and the implementation of women’s reservation in legislatures , both of which have significant electoral implications.

Responding to the allegations, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed Stalin’s claims as “baseless and politically motivated.” Party representatives maintained that no decision on delimitation has been finalised , and any such move would follow due constitutional process and consultations with stakeholders. They further accused opposition parties of misleading the public for electoral gains, asserting that the Centre remains committed to transparent governance and inclusive reforms.

The exchange highlights the growing political friction between the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre , with delimitation and reservation emerging as key flashpoints in the run-up to upcoming elections.
