NMC to create national assessor pool for medical college inspections

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has initiated the process to create a national pool of assessors from Government Medical Colleges to conduct inspections of medical institutions across the country for the upcoming academic year 2026–27.

In an official communication issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), NMC has directed all Directors, Principals and Deans of Government Medical Colleges and Institutions to circulate a public notice among eligible faculty members, seeking their willingness to serve as assessors. The move aims to strengthen and streamline the inspection mechanism under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.

According to the notice, faculty members who are eligible to act as postgraduate guides, as per the Teachers Eligibility Qualifications (TEQ) Regulations and the Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025, can apply to be empanelled. Interested faculty are required to submit their consent through a Google Form provided by MARB within 15 days of the issuance of the notice.

MARB has stated that these assessors will be engaged for inspections related to undergraduate and postgraduate applications for the academic year 2026–27. The same pool may also be utilised for surprise inspections and additional assessment activities, including scrutiny and evaluation of documents and reports related to medical colleges.

Highlighting the importance of inspections, the Commission said the exercise is crucial for ensuring and enhancing the quality of medical education in India. Given the possibility of surprise inspections, willing faculty from Government Medical Colleges will be called upon from time to time to support this regulatory process.

The NMC has clarified that the travel time and inspection day will be treated as “on duty” for selected assessors. All travel, lodging expenses and remuneration will be borne by the National Medical Commission.

Deans and Principals have been instructed to ensure wide dissemination of the notice by personal circulation to eligible faculty members and by displaying it on college notice boards. The initiative is expected to build a robust and transparent inspection framework as the Commission prepares for the next cycle of medical education assessments.
