Nitish Kumar to be sworn in as Rajya Sabha MP tomorrow

Nitish Kumar will be sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on April 10 , signaling a significant political shift in the state after more than two decades as chief minister. He is expected to travel to New Delhi on April 9 for the formal oath ceremony.

Following Kumar’s induction, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is preparing for the formation of a new Bihar government . Reports indicate that Kumar will resign as chief minister around April 14 , though a close aide has suggested he could potentially remain in the post for up to six months , leaving some uncertainty in the transition timeline. Once he resigns, the NDA plans high-level discussions between April 11 and April 13 to finalize the next state leadership, with the announcement of a new chief minister expected by April 13 and the swearing-in ceremony by April 15 .

Bihar’s newly elected Rajya Sabha MPs , including BJP national president Nitin Naveen and Sivesh Kumar , will take their oaths on April 16 during a special session of Parliament. Alongside BJP leaders, Upendra Kushwaha , head of the Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal (RLJD), will also be sworn in. All ceremonies will take place in the Rajya Sabha chamber . While Nitish Kumar takes his oath on April 10, the BJP and RLM leaders’ swearing-in on April 16 will coincide with the special session of Parliament , a timing seen as critical in setting the stage for Bihar’s new government formation and coordination between central and state leadership .

Ahead of government formation, the BJP will hold a crucial meeting in Delhi on April 10 , led by Nitin Naveen, with senior central leaders and state leadership in attendance. Present will be Bihar BJP president Sanjay Sarawagi, deputy leader Samrat Chaudhary, Vijay Kumar Sinha, Nityanand Rai, Sanjay Jaiswal, regional organisation secretary Nagendra Ji, and state organisation secretary Bhiku Bhai Dalsania , along with ministers Dilip Jaiswal and Mangal Pandey . The agenda includes finalizing the new chief minister’s name, attempting consensus within the core committee, and deciding next steps following Nitish Kumar’s resignation.

Political insiders note that while the NDA has yet to make official announcements, speculation continues that Kumar could remain a guiding mentor , while his son Nishant Kumar may take a senior role such as deputy chief minister to ensure continuity. Reports also highlight that the BJP’s Bihar leadership is coordinating closely with central leaders, aiming to ensure smooth transition and alignment between state and national priorities , particularly following recent elections in Assam and other states.
