Nishikant Dubey moves motion against Rahul Gandhi over Lok Sabha remarks

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey on Thursday said he has moved a motion in the Lok Sabha against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi , accusing him of misleading the nation through his recent statements in Parliament.

Dubey said the motion seeks the termination of Gandhi’s parliamentary membership and a lifetime ban on his contesting elections . Speaking to ANI, the BJP MP alleged that Gandhi’s remarks were aimed at creating a false narrative on India’s foreign and economic policies and were influenced by foreign forces inimical to the country’s interests.

“I have moved a motion in the Lok Sabha today against Rahul Gandhi for misleading the country. In my motion, I have sought the termination of his membership and a lifetime ban on contesting elections,” Dubey said.

The move comes a day after Gandhi, while speaking in the Lok Sabha, accused the Centre of compromising India’s national interests amid changing global geopolitical realities. He said the government itself had acknowledged that the world was facing a “global storm,” marked by the decline of a single-superpower order, intensifying geopolitical conflicts, and the weaponisation of energy and finance.

Referring to energy security, Gandhi said that despite recognising these challenges, the government had allowed the United States to influence India’s energy decisions. “When America says we cannot buy oil from a particular country, it effectively means our energy security is being dictated externally. Energy itself is being weaponised against us,” he said, accusing the government of surrendering India’s strategic autonomy.

Gandhi also raised concerns over trade policy, claiming that India’s average tariff rate had risen from around 3 per cent to 18 per cent , a six-fold increase. At the same time, he said imports from the United States were projected to rise sharply from USD 46 billion to USD 146 billion . Terming the situation “absurd,” he alleged that India was committing to increase imports by nearly USD 100 billion annually without firm reciprocal commitments.

The Congress and other Opposition parties criticised Dubey’s motion, calling it politically motivated and an attempt to silence dissent. Congress leaders said the government should respond to the issues raised by the Leader of Opposition on foreign policy, energy security and trade, instead of seeking punitive action. Several Opposition MPs also objected to parts of Gandhi’s speech being expunged from the official record, warning that such moves undermine parliamentary debate and democratic norms.
