
Nine deaths reported in Andhra Pradesh amid SCRUB TYPHUS concerns
Nine people in Andhra Pradesh have died after exhibiting symptoms consistent with scrub typhus, prompting the state’s Health Department to intensify disease surveillance. Health Commissioner Dr. G. Veerapandian stated that although all nine individuals showed signs suggestive of scrub typhus, it is not yet confirmed that the infection directly caused their deaths. Genome sequencing and detailed analyses are underway to determine the precise cause, a process that may take up to two or three months. Veerapandian stressed that there is no need for public panic, noting that scrub typhus does not typically result in sudden fatalities and is not a newly emerging disease in the state. Andhra Pradesh recorded 1,613 cases last year and has reported 1,566 cases so far this year, a number he attributes largely to improved testing and heightened awareness.
Scrub typhus diagnostic facilities have been made available at all Primary Health Centres, while advanced testing is being conducted at laboratories in Tirupati and Guntur. The commissioner pointed out that increased testing has naturally led to greater case identification. Andhra Pradesh has also reported far fewer cases than neighboring states, with Karnataka recording about 1,870 and Tamil Nadu over 7,300 cases this year. Rapid Response Teams have been deployed across all 26 districts to investigate areas associated with the suspected deaths and conduct environmental and epidemiological assessments. Individual incidents, such as the death of a 64-year-old woman in Komerapudi village of Palnadu district and reports of suspected cases in Vizianagaram and Guntur districts, have added to local concern, prompting door-to-door surveys and intensified monitoring.
Scrub typhus is caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi and spreads through bites from infected chigger mites. The disease is not contagious and cannot spread from person to person. Typical symptoms include high fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and in many cases, a distinctive black scab (eschar) at the bite site. When diagnosed early, scrub typhus is easily treated with antibiotics such as doxycycline or azithromycin. However, delays in diagnosis may lead to severe complications, including respiratory distress, liver inflammation, and kidney failure. Health officials have ensured that adequate stocks of antibiotics are available statewide and are urging residents in high-risk areas to seek prompt medical care if they experience prolonged fever.
Although the recent deaths have raised public attention, experts underline that scrub typhus cases naturally increase during the post-monsoon months. Long-term epidemiological studies, including a major Indian study published as PMC5116902, show that cases predictably rise between September and January due to ideal environmental conditions for mite activity. Post-monsoon weather marked by cooler temperatures, moisture, and dense vegetation creates perfect habitats for chigger mites. Agricultural workers face particularly high risk during this season because harvesting and field-clearing activities bring them into closer contact with mite-infested vegetation. Rural homes located near bushes, shrubs, and grasslands also face greater exposure, especially single-room dwellings that lie adjacent to thick vegetation. Adding to this, rodent populations which serve as hosts for infected mites surge after the monsoon, increasing the likelihood of transmission to humans. Meanwhile, expanded diagnostic capacity across the state has led to greater detection of cases that might previously have been misclassified as dengue, typhoid, or general viral fever.
The Health Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the nine suspected deaths and is conducting extensive environmental surveys in affected areas. Officials advise the public to wear protective clothing when working in fields, avoid sitting or sleeping on bare ground, and clear vegetation around homes to reduce exposure to mites. While the nine deaths remain under investigation, health authorities reiterate that the rise in scrub typhus cases is a seasonal and expected trend, not an indication of a new outbreak or an unusually dangerous situation. With continued vigilance, timely diagnosis, and appropriate treatment, scrub typhus remains highly manageable. The state awaits genome sequencing results, which will help determine whether the recent fatalities were caused by scrub typhus or related complications.
