Nidhi’s heroics lead India to shootout win over Uruguay

Goalkeeper Nidhi stole the show as India edged past Uruguay 3-1 in a tense shootout after a 1-1 draw, keeping their hopes alive for a ninth-place finish in the Junior Women’s Hockey World Cup in Santiago, Chile.

India drew first blood through Manisha in the 19th minute, who struck a powerful shot from distance to give her team an early lead. Uruguay fought back with determination, and Justina Arregui leveled the score in the 60th minute, converting a penalty stroke in the dying seconds to push the game into a shootout.

The match began with India controlling play, creating several early opportunities. Uruguay managed their first penalty corner in the fifth minute, but failed to convert. India earned a corner in the 18th minute, attempting a clever variation by passing to Sakshi Rana at the near post, but her effort was blocked by the Uruguay goalkeeper.

As the game progressed, Uruguay grew more aggressive, taking risks in the final quarter by replacing their goalkeeper with an outfield player to strengthen their attack. Their bold move paid off, earning a late penalty stroke that forced the shootout.

In the shootout, India’s composure and Nidhi’s brilliance proved decisive. Purnima Yadav, Ishika, and Kanika Siwach successfully converted their chances, while Nidhi made three crucial saves to deny Uruguay, securing India’s victory.

With this win, India will now face Spain on Thursday in the 9th/10th place classification match. Nidhi’s performance, combining sharp reflexes and calm under pressure, was the highlight of a hard-fought encounter, showcasing India’s resilience on the global stage.
