NHRC Cracks Down on Toxic Milk Tragedy, Issues Notices to State Government

A deadly adulterated milk incident in East Godavari district has claimed 16 lives and left several others in critical condition, triggering statewide alarm. The cases have been reported from areas around Rajamahendravaram, including Lalacheru, Chowdeswaranagar and Swaroopnagar.

Investigations indicate that the contaminated milk was supplied by Varalakshmi Milk Dairy in Narsapuram village. Officials detected ethylene glycol , a toxic industrial chemical, in the milk. Doctors say ingestion of this substance can lead to severe poisoning, causing kidney failure and other life-threatening complications. Many victims have shown symptoms of acute renal damage and are undergoing emergency dialysis.

Health authorities found that around 106 families had consumed the contaminated milk. The incident came to light on February 22 after a sudden surge of patients with similar symptoms at a private hospital in Rajamahendravaram. Children and elderly persons account for a majority of the fatalities.

Following the incident, officials suspended milk supply from the dairy and sent samples for forensic testing.

Taking serious note, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) initiated action on its own and issued notices to the State Chief Secretary and Director General of Police. It has sought a detailed report within two weeks, including information on victims’ health conditions, compensation to affected families and action taken against those responsible.

The tragedy has also raised concerns over lapses in food safety monitoring, particularly in rural areas. Victims’ families have demanded strict action against those behind the adulteration.
