NHAI’s QR signboards - Driving a safer, smarter future

In a significant step toward modernizing India's vast National Highway network, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched an innovative initiative to install Project Information Sign Boards equipped with Quick Response (QR) codes, as announced in a policy circular on September 23, 2025, and detailed in a press release.

These vertical signboards, made from durable materials like aluminum or aluminum composite material, aim to enhance transparency, boost road safety, and provide commuters with seamless access to critical information. By scanning the QR code, generated via the NHAI portal, highway users can access a digital dashboard offering details such as the National Highway number, chainage, project length, construction or maintenance timelines, and contact numbers for Highway Patrol, Toll Managers, Project Managers, Resident Engineers, the Emergency Helpline 1033, and NHAI field offices.

Additionally, the boards provide information on nearby amenities, including hospitals, petrol pumps, public toilets, police stations, restaurants, toll plazas, truck lay-byes, puncture repair shops, vehicle service stations, and e-charging points for electric vehicles, covering at least 20 essential facilities.

Unlike traditional highway signage, which adheres to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' static guidelines for directional cues and warnings, this initiative marks a leap toward interactive, smart infrastructure. Building on NHAI's 2023 guidelines for project information panels, the QR code system incorporates amendments finalized in December 2024, addressing earlier inconsistencies like vague placement rules or limited service details.

These boards, designed to remain legible for over a decade, will be strategically placed near wayside amenities, rest areas, toll plazas, truck lay-byes, and highway entry/exit points for maximum visibility, complemented by vibrant pavement markings like "NHAI Welcomes You" at key reassurance points. The digital integration allows for dynamic updates without physical replacements, a significant upgrade over static boards, and the inclusion of multilingual options and EV-specific amenities reflects India's push toward inclusivity and green mobility.

Notably, the project bypasses pilot phases, leveraging the proven reliability of QR technology already familiar through FASTag apps and urban navigation systems. NHAI's budgetary provisions, outlined in the September circular, allocate funds across its five operational zones, suggesting a phased nationwide rollout, potentially starting with high-traffic corridors like NH-44 or NH-48 by Q1 2026.

The initiative aligns with NHAI's broader safety goals, addressing India's alarming 1.5 lakh annual road fatalities by enabling faster access to emergency services, particularly in rural areas with patchy connectivity. Though challenges like smartphone penetration or remote-area maintenance persist, the project's low-cost, high-impact design coupled with its focus on user experience positions it as a transformative step in making India's highways safer, smarter, and more commuter-friendly.
