NHAI, Jio team up to launch highway safety alert system
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio to roll out a telecom-based safety alert system aimed at enhancing road safety and improving the travel experience along the National Highway network. Leveraging Jio’s extensive 4G and 5G coverage, the system will send advance warnings to commuters approaching high-risk zones, including accident-prone stretches, areas with stray animals, fog-affected corridors and sections requiring emergency diversions.
The alerts—delivered via SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority calls—are designed to help drivers adjust their speed and driving behaviour well before entering potentially hazardous locations. The system will be integrated in phases with NHAI’s digital platforms, such as the ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile application and the 1033 emergency helpline.
The automated system will function for all Jio users travelling on or near National Highways, providing early warnings without any need for new roadside infrastructure. By utilising Jio’s existing network of telecom towers and digital ecosystem, which serves over 500 million subscribers nationwide, the initiative promises quick deployment and wide reach.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said the initiative represents a major step forward in delivering timely, reliable information to commuters, enabling them to make informed decisions and adopt safer driving practices. “I am sure this initiative will set a new benchmark in technology-enabled road safety management on National Highways,” he added.
Jyotindra Thacker, President of Reliance Jio, noted that the collaboration harnesses Jio’s network strength to deliver safety alerts at scale, contributing to safer and more informed highway travel.
The pilot phase will begin under select NHAI regional offices to refine risk-zone identification and alert parameters. The initiative will be fully compliant with regulatory standards and data-protection norms.
NHAI has also indicated plans to engage with other telecom service providers for similar collaborations. By combining strong digital infrastructure with real-time communication tools, the programme is expected to significantly boost commuter awareness and reduce preventable road incidents. The authority reaffirmed its commitment to adopting innovative and scalable solutions for safer, smarter and more efficient highway travel across India.
