Next Stop, Trump Station? White House Push to Rename New York's Penn Station

A proposal by the Donald Trump administration to rename New York's Penn Station has sparked a fresh political debate as the federal government moves ahead with an ambitious USD 8 billion redevelopment of the country's busiest rail hub.

The proposal emerged after US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urged Congress to approve funding for the long-delayed renovation project. While his letter did not suggest a specific new name, Duffy has previously said that "Trump Station" would be a fitting choice. Earlier this year, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt also appeared supportive of the idea, responding to questions with, "Why not?"

President Donald Trump, however, has maintained that the suggestion did not originate from him. He claimed the idea was raised by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer during discussions related to federal funding for the Gateway Project, a major rail tunnel connecting New York and New Jersey. Trump has also argued that it is unusual for one of New York's most prominent landmarks to carry the name of another state.

Penn Station traces its name to the Pennsylvania Railroad, which built the original Beaux-Arts station in 1910. Widely admired for its grand architecture, the historic building was demolished in 1963 to make way for Madison Square Garden, leaving behind the crowded underground transit hub used by millions of passengers every year.

The proposed redevelopment aims to restore much of the station's former grandeur with a grand concourse, soaring ceilings, stone façades and classical columns inspired by the original structure. Project renderings have also shown an interior wall featuring Trump's presidential seal and name, adding to the controversy.

Critics have strongly opposed both the renaming proposal and the federal takeover of the project. Representative Jerry Nadler accused the administration of turning the redevelopment into a political vanity project at taxpayers' expense, while the Riders Alliance argued that improving rail services should take priority over symbolic name changes.

Although the redevelopment is moving forward under Amtrak's leadership, whether Penn Station will eventually become "Trump Station" remains uncertain, with the proposal already igniting intense political debate across the United States.
