Next Nobel Prize to India - When and how?

As the world celebrates the newly announced Nobel Prize winners of 2025 scientists decoding the mysteries of quantum matter, economists shaping green growth, and peace activists defending democracy India once again finds itself on the sidelines. Despite its vast population, rich intellect, and civilizational heritage, the country’s presence on the Nobel stage remains sparse. The question naturally arises: Why does a nation of 1.4 billion people produce so few Nobel laureates?

India’s association with the Nobel Prize goes back more than a century. Rabindranath Tagore was the first Asian to win the Nobel in 1913 for literature, giving India a place on the global intellectual map. C.V. Raman followed in 1930 with his discovery of the Raman Effect, a milestone in physics. Later came Mother Teresa for Peace, Amartya Sen for Economics, Kailash Satyarthi for his campaign against child labor, and Abhijit Banerjee, an Indian-origin economist working in the United States. Beyond these few names, the list is thin for a country of such immense talent.

The reasons for this shortfall are deeply rooted in India’s history and institutional culture. Decades of colonial rule left the subcontinent with an education system designed for administration, not innovation. Even after independence, India struggled to create a research culture that values deep inquiry over immediate utility. The country’s investment in research and development still hovers around one percent of GDP, far below global leaders like the U.S., Japan, or South Korea. Laboratories across Indian universities often face outdated infrastructure, limited autonomy, and bureaucratic hurdles that stifle creativity.

Equally troubling is the nature of India’s education system itself. From schools to universities, rote learning dominates over questioning and critical thinking. The brightest students are often drawn to engineering, medicine, or civil services careers offering stability rather than risk. Genuine scientific inquiry, by contrast, demands patience, failure, and a culture that rewards curiosity. It is no surprise, then, that many of India’s Nobel laureates from Tagore to and Abhijit Banerjee did their most important work abroad, in research environments that encouraged intellectual freedom and collaboration.

Another major factor is the lack of institutional continuity. Research projects in India are frequently dependent on changing government priorities or political patronage. Academic institutions are too often burdened by red tape, short-term funding, and leadership changes that disrupt long-term projects. Nobel-winning work usually emerges from decades of sustained, focused research. Without that ecosystem, brilliance rarely finds its full expression.

Cultural attitudes also play a subtle but powerful role. In a society that values professional success and family stability, research is seen as an uncertain and underpaid pursuit. Many parents discourage their children from pursuing careers in science or the humanities unless they promise quick returns. As a result, India produces millions of graduates every year but relatively few original thinkers.

It must also be acknowledged that the Nobel Prize, while prestigious, is not the sole measure of intellectual greatness. India’s spiritual, philosophical, and artistic contributions have enriched humanity for centuries, even if they do not fit within the Western-defined categories of Nobel recognition. Yet in an interconnected world, where science and innovation shape global influence, the absence of Indian names among the laureates reflects a gap that the nation cannot ignore.

So what can be done? The answer lies in systemic reform and cultural transformation.

First, India must dramatically increase investment in research and higher education, ensuring that universities are not merely teaching factories but centers of discovery. Second, academic freedom must be protected; political or bureaucratic interference should never dictate what scientists or writers can explore. Third, collaboration between universities, industries, and international research centers should be strengthened to create an ecosystem that supports ambitious, long-term projects. Fourth, the education system must shift from memorization to inquiry, training students to ask questions, experiment, and think independently.

Fifth, society must start valuing intellectual work celebrating scientists, writers, and innovators with the same enthusiasm reserved for celebrities and sports icons.

India is not short of intellect, it is short of encouragement. The Nobel Prize, at its heart, honors the power of ideas that change humanity. For India to reclaim its place on that global platform, it must build a culture where curiosity is celebrated, where failure is part of learning, and where the pursuit of knowledge is seen not as a luxury, but as a national mission. Only then will the next generation of Indian minds find themselves not just applauding Nobel winners but standing among them.
