In a heartening display of civic responsibility, newly married couples in Kerala chose to cast their votes on polling day, placing democratic duty alongside personal milestones during the ongoing state elections.

In Pathanamthitta district, Divyasree and Ashwant made a memorable detour to a polling station soon after tying the knot on Thursday morning. Dressed in their wedding attire, the couple arrived at the booth around noon, drawing attention from officials and voters alike. They described their decision as a shared commitment, underscoring the importance of participating in the electoral process.

Ashwant noted that their wedding date had been finalized months before the election schedule was announced, making the overlap coincidental. Having missed several voting opportunities in the past due to work commitments outside the state, he said he was determined not to forgo the chance this time. His wife echoed the sentiment, emphasising that exercising one’s franchise is a responsibility that should not be neglected.

A similar scene unfolded in Wayanad, where bride Akhila Antony arrived at a polling station in full bridal attire shortly before her wedding ceremony. With limited time after the event, she chose to vote first. Polling officials facilitated a swift process, enabling her to proceed to her wedding venue without delay.

Kerala is witnessing keen voter participation in the current elections, with authorities reporting enthusiastic turnout across districts. The state has traditionally recorded high polling percentages, reflecting strong public engagement in democratic processes.

The actions of these individuals have drawn widespread appreciation, serving as a reminder of the significance of voting. Their gesture reinforces the idea that even on life’s most significant occasions, the call of democracy can take precedence.
