New Zealand Beats South Africa by 68 Runs in 2nd T20, Series Level at 1-1
New Zealand defeated South Africa by 68 runs in the second Twenty20 International at Seddon Park , leveling the five-match series at 1-1.
Sent in to bat, New Zealand made 175-6 on a pitch that became trickier as the evening progressed. Devon Conway was the top scorer with 60 runs , anchoring the innings for three-quarters of the game. Tom Latham provided a strong start with square-of-the-wicket shots and ramped for a six and four over fine leg, helping New Zealand reach 43-0 after the powerplay and 81-2 after 10 overs . However, the team struggled to accelerate in the middle overs as dew settled and the pitch offered variable pace and bounce. Nick Kelly scored 21 from 12 balls but was bowled by Wiaan Mulder , while Mitchell Santner made 20 before being beaten by a ball from Ottneil Baartman . Conway eventually fell top-edging a pull to wicketkeeper Connor Esterhuizen . Late cameos from Josh Clarkson (26 off nine balls) and Cole McConchie , along with 24 runs from the last over , helped New Zealand reach a competitive total.
Chasing 176, South Africa faltered against disciplined pace bowling. Ben Sears and Lockie Ferguson shared six wickets, bowling South Africa out for 107 in 15.3 overs . All wickets fell to catches, with only George Linde offering resistance, scoring 33 off 12 balls , including three fours and three sixes. Sears, who was a traveling reserve at the recent T20 World Cup, took 3-14 , while Ferguson claimed 3-16 , dismissing Linde to finish the innings.
South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj said, “We bowled really well up to a point but lost our way with the bat. The dew was expected to improve the wicket, but New Zealand’s bowlers stifled us upfront and forced errors on a tricky surface.”
Conway, reflecting on his innings, said, “It’s been a quiet couple of months for me, and it was nice to contribute after watching the boys play. It feels good to be part of the team’s performance.”
The third T20I will be played in Auckland on Friday , with the series finely poised at 1-1.
