A strike by workers of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has brought the busiest commuter rail system in North America to a halt after contract negotiations collapsed between unions and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) , union officials said on Saturday.

About 3,500 to 7,000 workers across five unions , including locomotive engineers, machinists, electricians and signalmen, walked off the job at 12:01 a.m. after talks broke down at the end of a federal “cooling-off period” that followed months of stalled negotiations. The LIRR serves roughly 250,000 to 300,000 daily commuters travelling between Long Island and New York City.

The dispute centres on wages under a new four-year contract. Unions are demanding a package that includes a 5 per cent increase in the fourth year , in addition to previously agreed raises totalling around 9.5 per cent over the first three years , arguing that inflation and rising living costs have eroded earnings. The MTA has offered a 3 per cent increase plus lump-sum payments , saying its proposal is more sustainable and warning that higher costs could force fare hikes.

Despite earlier federal mediation efforts, negotiations ended without agreement and no new talks have been scheduled. The MTA has said the gap between both sides remains narrow but financially significant.

The strike has immediately suspended train services, forcing commuters to depend on limited replacement shuttle buses , road travel, or remote work options. Authorities have warned of severe congestion across highways leading into New York City, while Governor Kathy Hochul has urged residents to work from home wherever possible.

The disruption marks the first LIRR strike since 1994 , a rare shutdown of a system critical to New York’s daily workforce. Analysts estimate the stoppage could cost millions of dollars per day in economic losses while intensifying pressure on both sides to return to negotiations.
