New landmark coming to Hyderabad’s Musi River

Hyderabad is set to witness a transformative new landmark with the proposed Gandhi Sarovar Project, an ambitious initiative announced by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. During a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi, Reddy requested the transfer of 98.20 acres of defence land in Hyderabad to the state government to bring this vision to life. The project aims to create a Gandhi Circle of Unity at the confluence of the Musi and Esa rivers, symbolising national integration and the enduring ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

The plan for Gandhi Sarovar is as much cultural as it is educational and environmental. The state envisions establishing a knowledge hub, a Dhyana Gramam or meditation village, handloom awareness centres, landscaped spaces, a peace statue, and a museum. These elements are designed to blend learning, reflection, and sustainable development, making the project a holistic urban landmark rather than just a tourist attraction. By integrating green spaces with cultural and educational hubs, the project is positioned to become a centre of social harmony and public engagement in the city.

Beyond symbolism, the Gandhi Sarovar Project is a strategic move to strengthen Hyderabad’s urban identity along the Musi River, which has long suffered from neglect and environmental degradation. By reclaiming and repurposing the defence land, the government aims to revive the riverfront while promoting civic pride and community involvement. Experts say that if executed efficiently, the project could serve as a model for urban riverfront development in India, balancing heritage, ecology, and modern infrastructure.

The Chief Minister’s Delhi visit also included discussions with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on funding for Young India Integrated Residential Schools and with Nitin Gadkari for a 12-lane greenfield road linking Hyderabad’s proposed Future City to Machilipatnam port via Amaravati. These initiatives, alongside Gandhi Sarovar, signal a larger vision of transforming Hyderabad into a hub of education, culture, and connectivity, reflecting the state’s long-term development ambitions.

This project represents not just a landmark but a statement: Hyderabad is investing in spaces that connect history, community, and progress, and Gandhi Sarovar could soon become a defining icon along the Musi River.
