New faces, big dreams: India eyes strong run at Asian Wrestling Championships

India enters the Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek with a renewed sense of confidence, driven by a mix of emerging talent and proven performers. The continental tournament begins on Monday, and the Indian contingent believes its new generation of wrestlers is ready to challenge Asia’s best.

One of the biggest talking points ahead of the championships is Meenakshi Goyat in the 53kg category , who stunned the wrestling community during the national trials. The 25 year old produced a remarkable performance to defeat two time World Championships medallist Antim Panghal , a wrestler who had previously dominated their encounters.

For Meenakshi, the victory was not just about technique but also about overcoming psychological barriers. Having lost to Antim several times earlier, she displayed impressive composure and tactical discipline, building a 6-2 lead before securing a win by fall . Training under former national coach Kuldeep Malik in Sonepat , Meenakshi has steadily grown into a strong contender and now looks settled in the 53kg division after previously moving between weight categories.

India’s women’s squad also carries several promising names. Neelam Sirohi (50kg) caught attention during the trials with a spectacular suplex throw , showcasing her ability to finish bouts decisively. Manisha Bhanwala (57kg) and Mansi Ahlawat (62kg) also secured their places with controlled performances, adding depth to the team’s medal prospects.

The women’s lineup further includes Hanshika Lamba, Neha Sangwan, Monika, Mansi Lather, Harshitha and Kajal Dhocjak , reflecting a healthy blend of youth and experience in Indian wrestling.
