New Aadhaar App launched: Address & mobile updates now in minutes
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched the New Aadhaar App, offering a smarter, fully paperless, and more secure platform for managing Aadhaar identities. Available on both Android and iOS, the app debuts alongside UIDAI’s updated policy effective November 1, 2025, which now allows residents to update minor details—such as address and mobile number—entirely online. This is expected to greatly reduce queues, travel costs, and delays, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where access to Aadhaar centres remains limited.
The app arrives at a crucial time. With over 1.3 billion Aadhaar holders and increasing dependence on digital governance platforms, the need for a secure, remote, and user-friendly identity-management tool has become urgent. It also aligns with the upcoming enforcement of the Data Protection Act, 2023, in January 2026, which mandates stronger safeguards for personal data.
Key features include Face ID login, QR-based verification, AI-assisted authentication, encrypted data transmission, and the ability to generate Virtual IDs, lock/unlock Aadhaar, and track update requests. One of the most appreciated additions is the recent authentication history option—users can now instantly check where and when their Aadhaar was used. Early user feedback has called the feature “cool and reassuring,” with some even requesting similar functionality for PAN card misuse detection.
Many users have also asked how the New Aadhaar App differs from the earlier mAadhaar app. If UIDAI does not clearly outline the differences—whether in security architecture, features, or long-term roadmap—it risks confusion among existing users. Clarity from UIDAI will be essential in driving adoption and trust.
Analysts say the new app, designed with scalability for future upgrades like multi-factor authentication and health-ID integration, could save India up to ₹10,000 crore annually by reducing paperwork and travel. A security audit is expected by March 2026, after which its full impact will be clearer.
