A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck a rural region of Nevada on Monday evening, sending tremors across nearby communities and causing light to moderate damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred just before 6:30 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located approximately 12.9 miles (20.7 kilometres) east of Silver Springs, a small town situated near the state capital, Carson City. The quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 3.1 miles (5 kilometres), which often intensifies the impact felt at the surface.

Residents in surrounding areas reported strong to very strong shaking , with some describing sudden jolts that rattled buildings and caused objects to fall. Initial assessments indicate instances of light to moderate structural damage , though no immediate reports of casualties have been confirmed.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are capable of causing noticeable damage, particularly in rural regions where infrastructure may be less resilient. Nevada lies within a seismically active zone influenced by the Basin and Range geological province, making such tremors relatively common, though not always destructive.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and assess the extent of the damage, while residents have been advised to remain cautious amid the possibility of aftershocks.
