In a landmark moment for cultural heritage diplomacy, the Netherlands has formally returned the 11th century Chola dynasty copper plates to India , marking a major step in restoring priceless historical artefacts to their place of origin.

The handover took place in The Hague during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , underscoring growing cultural and diplomatic engagement between India and the Netherlands .

The artefact, known as the Anaimangalam Copper Plates or the Leiden Plates , consists of 21 copper plates bound together by a bronze ring bearing the royal seal of the Chola dynasty . These plates are considered one of the most important surviving records of the Chola period and hold exceptional value for Tamil heritage and Indian history.

The inscriptions trace back to the reign of Rajaraja Chola I , one of the most powerful rulers of the Chola empire, and were later formally engraved during the time of his successor Rajendra Chola I to preserve royal grants and administrative orders. Written in both Sanskrit and Tamil , the plates reflect the linguistic and cultural richness of the era and provide rare insight into governance, temple endowments, and social structure of early medieval South India.

Historically, the plates were originally created in the Chola heartland around Nagapattinam and were part of royal records documenting endowments, including grants linked to religious and charitable institutions. In the early 18th century, they were taken to the Netherlands by Florentius Camper during the colonial period, when the region was under Dutch influence. Over time, they became part of Dutch collections and were preserved in Leiden, giving them the name Leiden Plates .

Since 2012 , India has been actively pursuing their return, arguing that the plates are not just artefacts but a vital part of national memory and cultural identity. The Intergovernmental Committee on Return and Restitution had earlier validated India’s claim and encouraged continued bilateral dialogue for their repatriation.

The return of these copper plates carries deep cultural significance for India, as they represent not only the administrative sophistication of the Chola empire but also the enduring legacy of Indian maritime, religious, and cultural influence across Southeast Asia. For historians and scholars, they remain a rare primary source that connects present-day India with its ancient civilisational heritage.

The decision by the Netherlands to return the artefacts during the Prime Minister’s visit is being viewed as a major step in cultural restitution, reinforcing mutual respect and strengthening historical ties between the two nations.
