Netflix premieres Yami Gautam’s "Haq", inspired by Shah Bano's landmark case!
After a successful theatrical run and widespread critical acclaim, Haq has now begun streaming on Netflix India , opening the film to a much wider audience.
Directed by Suparn S. Varma , Haq is inspired by the landmark 1985 Shah Bano Supreme Court case , a historic verdict in which the Supreme Court ruled that a divorced Muslim woman was entitled to maintenance under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The judgment triggered a nationwide debate on personal laws, women’s rights, and secular values, themes that form the emotional and legal core of the film.
Released in theatres on November 7, 2025 , Haq collected nearly ₹21 crore at the Indian box office, marking a strong performance for a content driven courtroom drama. The film also received glowing reviews, with The Times of India awarding it 4.5 out of 5 for its sensitive and compelling storytelling.
The theatrical release was not without controversy. Ahead of its release, the film faced a brief legal challenge from members of Shah Bano’s family, who raised objections over the portrayal of events. However, the court dismissed the plea, clearing the way for the film’s release, and no major disruptions followed during its theatrical run.
Yami Gautam delivers what critics have described as a career best performance as the resilient woman at the centre of the case, while the male lead, Emraan Hashmi , is praised for his restrained portrayal of an advocate navigating complex moral and legal dilemmas. With its arrival on Netflix, Haq is expected to reach a wider audience and renew conversations around one of India’s most significant legal milestones.
