A chilling robbery involving a suspected Nepali gang has once again raised concerns over organised domestic-worker-linked crimes in Hyderabad after an elderly couple was allegedly tied up, drugged, and robbed of valuables worth nearly ₹16.5 lakh . The incident, which took place in the city’s Kowkur area, comes amid growing public anxiety following another high-profile crime recently linked to suspected Nepali workers.

According to police officials, the victims include a retired international arbitrator and his wife, a professional pathologist, who had hired a Nepali couple through an agent only a few weeks ago for household assistance. Investigators believe the suspects gradually gained the couple’s trust before executing the carefully planned robbery.

Police said the crime unfolded on the night of May 11 , when the domestic workers reportedly sought permission to host a small birthday celebration at the residence. During the gathering, several associates allegedly entered the house. Soon after, the elderly couple were threatened, their hands and legs tied, and they were locked inside a room.

Officials suspect the accused forced the victims to consume a sedative-laced liquid , causing them to lose consciousness. The gang then allegedly looted gold ornaments, silver articles, cash, valuable household items , and a two-wheeler vehicle before fleeing the scene. The total value of the stolen property is estimated at around ₹16.5 lakh .

Investigators also suspect the gang attempted to destroy evidence by damaging CCTV equipment and removing digital storage devices. Shockingly, the couple remained trapped inside the room until Tuesday afternoon. The woman eventually managed to reach a window and cry out for help, alerting nearby residents who informed the police.

The case has gained wider attention because of its similarity to the recent murder of Tanuja Ranjan , wife of retired IPS officer Vinay Ranjan Ray , in which investigators are also probing the possible involvement of a Nepali domestic worker network.

Police have formed special investigation teams to track down the accused, who are suspected to have fled Telangana. Authorities are now urging residents to conduct proper police verification and background checks before hiring domestic workers through private agents.
