Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Sunday clarified that his government did not seek British mediation to resolve the border dispute with India, saying Nepal only referred to historical evidence from the British era if required.

Addressing the first general convention of the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Chitwan, Shah said the border issue would be resolved through talks with India and urged people not to doubt his commitment to Nepal’s national interests.

The clarification came after controversy over his earlier remarks in Parliament that Nepal had involved China and the UK in discussions over border issues. India had rejected any role for third parties, maintaining that the matter should be settled through bilateral dialogue .

Nepal’s Foreign Ministry later clarified that Shah’s comments referred to no-man’s land and cross-border occupation issues rather than seeking international intervention.

The long-running border dispute between Nepal and India involves Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura , with both countries claiming the territories. India maintains that the areas fall under Uttarakhand and has called for diplomatic discussions to resolve differences.

Shah reiterated that Nepal has evidence supporting its claims and said India could present its own documents if it disputed Nepal’s position.
