Nepal PM Karki pledges free and fair elections on March 5, 2026

Nepal's interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, reaffirmed her government's commitment to conducting the upcoming general election on March 5, 2026, in a free, fair, and secure manner. Addressing a gathering in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, she emphasized the administration's responsibility to address the legitimate voices of Generation Z in line with the Constitution. The government aims to create an environment where Nepali citizens can vote without fear, thereby strengthening democracy, advancing prosperity, and safeguarding citizens' rights.

Prime Minister Karki also expressed sorrow over the deaths and injuries during the Gen Z-led protests on September 8 and 9. She assured that investigations into these incidents are progressing and that the government is committed to ensuring accountability.

In a bid to foster national cooperation, Karki appealed to all sectors to support the successful conduct of the elections. She highlighted the importance of a peaceful and fair election process and urged political parties and citizens to work together to achieve this goal.

The upcoming elections are scheduled to elect 275 members to Nepal's House of Representatives, with 165 members elected through the first-past-the-post system and 110 through proportional representation. This electoral process is a significant step in Nepal's democratic journey, and the interim government's efforts aim to ensure its credibility and transparency.
