Nepal Boxers Sharpen Asian Games Preparations at SAI Guwahati

The Nepal Boxing Team is training at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Guwahati ahead of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, which begin in Japan on September 19.

The Nepal delegation comprises seven boxers Ramisha Shrestha (51kg), Asmita Duwal (54kg), Kusum Tamang (65kg), Chandra Bahadur Thapa (55kg), Khagendra Roka Magar (60kg), Dan Bahadur Darlami (70kg) and Rabin Nepal (90kg). Head coach Raj Shrestha and coach Deepak Maharjan are accompanying the team.

The training camp, requested by the Nepal Boxing Federation, began on August 10 and will continue until September 15. The team will travel to Japan after completing the camp.

SAI boxing coaches Narendra Rana, Trideep Borah and Pranamika Borah are overseeing the training programme at the Guwahati centre.

The programme covers technical development, physical conditioning, tactical preparation and competitive readiness. The boxers are also training and sparring with athletes from the Indian Army and Meghalaya.

SAI NCOE Boxing Coach Narendra Rana said the training and sparring sessions have provided the Nepalese team with a competitive environment and exposure to different boxing styles and tactical situations.

Nepal boxer Ramisha Shrestha, who will compete in the 51kg category, said the facilities, coaching and quality of sparring at SAI NCOE Guwahati had helped the team improve technically and physically.

The Nepal Boxing Federation had requested the combined training and friendly competition programme at SAI NCOE Guwahati as part of the team’s preparations for the Asian Games.

SAI Regional Centre Guwahati Executive Director D.K. Mittal said sporting exchanges between India and Nepal help promote friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding.

The training camp also includes sparring opportunities with Indian boxers, allowing the Nepalese athletes to train alongside competitors from different backgrounds.

The seven-member Nepal squad is scheduled to remain at the SAI centre until September 15 before leaving for Japan for the Asian Games.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will begin on September 19, with athletes from across Asia participating in the continental sporting event.
