
Nepal appoints former army lieutenant general Bala Nanda Sharma as new foreign minister
Bala Nanda Sharma officially assumed the office of Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs today, taking the oath of office and secrecy from President Ram Chandra Paudel at a ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas in Kathmandu . His appointment comes as part of the fifth expansion of the interim cabinet , which now comprises 15 members overseeing government affairs until the upcoming general election scheduled for March 5, 2026 .
Officiating Foreign Secretary Mr. Krishna Prasad Dhakal and senior officials of the Ministry warmly welcomed the newly appointed minister. The ceremony was attended by Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav , Prime Minister Sushila Karki , Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut , heads of diplomatic missions, and other high-ranking government officials, reflecting broad institutional support for Nepal’s foreign policy agenda.
Hon. Minister Sharma brings extensive experience in national security, defense, and international diplomacy. He served nearly 39 years in the Nepal Army, rising to the rank of lieutenant general, and held key command and staff positions, both in Nepal and in United Nations peacekeeping missions abroad. He played a pivotal role in the integration of Maoist combatants into the national army following Nepal’s peace process and served as head of the COVID-19 Crisis Management Center, overseeing the country’s pandemic response coordination.
During his address at the Ministry, Hon. Minister Sharma instructed officials to work effectively to protect and promote Nepal’s national interests, emphasizing proactive diplomacy, strategic engagement, and strengthening Nepal’s global presence. His unique blend of military, crisis-management, and international experience positions him to guide Nepal’s foreign relations during a critical transitional period.
Sharma’s appointment underscores the government’s commitment to diplomatic stability and continuity, ensuring Nepal’s foreign policy objectives remain strong as the country navigates domestic and international challenges ahead.
