Two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra has announced the end of his partnership with Czech javelin legend Jan Zelezny , which began in November 2024 and lasted for around 14 months . During the stint, Chopra achieved major milestones, including breaching the coveted 90-metre mark , while also registering consistent podium finishes at international meets.

Chopra described the season as one marked by “progress, respect, and a shared love for the sport,” though he did not specify an official reason for ending the stint. Analysts suggest that the decision could be linked to Chopra’s desire to take charge of his own coaching direction and tailor training strategies for long-term goals, including the 2027 World Championships and the 2028 Olympic Games .

Under Zelezny’s guidance, Chopra achieved personal and technical breakthroughs. “Learning directly from an athlete I admired since childhood gave me a completely new toolbox of exercises, technical ideas, and fresh perspectives,” Chopra said. “The way he thinks about technique, rhythm, and movement is incredible, and I learned something from every single session.”

Chopra also highlighted the personal bond they built. “What I’m most proud of is the friendship I’ve formed with someone who has been my idol all my life. Jan is not only the best javelin thrower of all time, but also one of the best human beings I have ever met,” he added.

For his part, 59-year-old Zelezny spoke warmly about their collaboration. “Working with an athlete like Neeraj was a great experience. I’m glad we met and worked together, and that I got him to break the 90-metre barrier for the first time. Apart from the World Championships, he finished at worst second, which is not a bad record. Unfortunately, a back injury 12 days before Tokyo affected his chances,” he said. Zelezny added that Chopra has enormous potential in the years ahead and confirmed that their friendship will continue, both professionally and personally.

Looking ahead, Chopra is focused on his future plans. “I started my preparation in early November. My goal is to stay healthy, and I am already excited to compete again soon,” he said. With a new year and fresh strategies ahead, fans will be watching closely to see how India’s javelin ace builds on his successes under Zelezny.
