Neeraj Chopra Qualifies for 2026 Diamond League Final Despite Skipping Zurich

India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has secured his place in the 2026 Diamond League Final, despite missing the Zurich Diamond League meet held on Thursday.

The prestigious Diamond League is a multi-event international athletics series, featuring track and field disciplines ranging from sprinting and distance races to jumps and throwing events. Chopra competes in the men's javelin, one of several disciplines that will culminate in the season-ending final.

According to the official Diamond League standings, Chopra accumulated 12 points from his appearances in Doha and Lausanne, which was enough to secure qualification for the men's javelin final. The Diamond League Final will be held in Brussels on September 4 and 5.

Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage leads the javelin standings with 39 points. Other athletes to have secured qualification include Anderson Peters, Keshorn Walcott, Curtis Thompson and Julius Yego.

Chopra's place in the final was strengthened by his impressive performance at the Lausanne Diamond League, where he finished second with a season-best throw of 88.05 metres. He narrowly missed the top spot by just nine centimetres, while Pathirage won with an effort of 88.14m.

The return to the 88m mark was a significant positive for Chopra after a challenging start to the 2026 season. Before Lausanne, he had competed in only two events, finishing fourth in Doha with 85.69m and second at the Commonwealth Games without crossing the 86m mark.

Meanwhile, Pathirage continued his remarkable season at the Zurich Diamond League, producing a massive 92.07m throw to claim victory. Peters finished second with 86.23m, while Poland's Dawid Wegner secured third place with a personal-best effort of 85.16m.

Chopra, who has previously recorded five Diamond League meet wins and one overall title, made history in 2022 by becoming the first Indian to win the Diamond League trophy. With his qualification now confirmed, the Indian star will look to finish the season strongly in Brussels.
