NDRF, SDRF intensify rescue operations after stone mine collapse in Sonbhadra - Death toll rises to 6

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have raced to clear debris and locate workers after a section of a stone quarry collapsed in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday. Tragically, at least six workers have so far been confirmed dead, and several more remain feared trapped.

According to district officials, one body was initially recovered. Overnight, five additional bodies were pulled from the rubble, raising the death toll to six. The deceased include Indrajit (30), a resident of Panari, Obra; his brother Santosh Yadav (30); Ravindra alias Nanak (18); Ramkhelavan (32); and Kripashankar, in addition to the first victim, Raju Singh Gaur. District Magistrate of Sonbhadra district Badrinath Singh said that large boulders are hampering rescue operations, making debris clearing slow and difficult. Authorities estimate that several more workers may still be trapped beneath the rock mass.

The collapse occurred during drilling operations at the Billi Markundi site, where labourers were preparing holes for blasting. Rescue teams on site include the NDRF, SDRF, fire brigade, and local police, all working with heavy machinery and specialized equipment to reach victims safely.

Meanwhile, local political leaders have raised serious concerns over illegal mining practices. Samajwadi Party MP Chhotelal Kharwar alleged that the quarry was run by the “mining mafia” in collusion with local authorities. An FIR has already been filed against the leaseholder, Krishna Mining Works, and two of its partners.

A magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident. As rescue efforts continue through the night, local officials have expressed hope that any survivors will be brought out soon though they caution that the presence of massive rocks could considerably delay the work.
