NDA leaders to assess Karur stampede, meet families

In the wake of one of Tamil Nadu’s deadliest crowd tragedies, an eight-member NDA delegation will visit Karur to assess the circumstances that led to a fatal stampede during the TVK party rally. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has claimed 41 lives, including 18 women and 10 children, and left dozens injured.

BJP chief JP Nadda announced the formation of the delegation, which includes senior leaders like Anurag Thakur, Tejasvi Surya, Braj Lal, Aprajita Sarangi, Rekha Sharma, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, and Telugu Desam Party’s Putta Mahesh Kumar. BJP MP Hema Malini will convene the committee. The team will meet the families of the deceased and submit a detailed report after reviewing the situation on the ground.

Expressing his condolences, Nadda stated, “My heartfelt sympathies are with the families of those who lost their lives. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.” Earlier in the day, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, along with Union Minister L. Murugan and Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran, visited the families and assured them of all possible assistance. The ministers also visited the Government Medical College Hospital in Karur.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin described the stampede as “a tragedy that should never happen again,” urging political parties and public organizations to frame stricter rules for organizing large gatherings. He recalled witnessing the scenes at the hospital firsthand and expressed his deep grief over the loss of life.

The tragedy has exposed the vulnerability of public events in the state, highlighting lapses in crowd management and emergency preparedness. Authorities are under pressure to investigate whether the rally was organized responsibly and to prevent such disasters in the future.

The Karur incident has left the region in shock, with families still grappling with the sudden loss of loved ones, and raises urgent questions about safety standards at political events across the country.
