NCERT Introduces 20-Hour AI Module for Classes 9-12, Students to Learn Deepfake Detection and Digital Ethics
Students in Classes 9 to 12 will now learn how artificial intelligence (AI) work s, how to identify deepfakes and why personal data must be protected, under a new 20-hour introductory module released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
Developed in consultation with IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur, the activity-based module introduces students to computational thinking (CT) and artificial intelligence, aiming to equip them with the skills to understand, evaluate and use emerging technologies responsibly.
The module is designed for students with no prior knowledge of AI. It introduces computational thinking as a systematic approach to solving problems and explains how machines learn from examples, where AI is used in everyday life, and what its capabilities and limitations are.
Rather than encouraging students to accept AI-generated answers at face value, the programme seeks to develop critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills, helping learners question, assess and verify information produced by AI systems.
A key focus is the ethical and safe use of technology. Students will explore issues such as deepfakes, misinformation, data privacy, fairness and digital safety, learning why AI-generated content must be examined carefully before being trusted or shared.
According to NCERT, the module follows an experiential learning approach involving discussions, practical exercises, experimentation and reflection. Activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, allowing schools with different levels of technological access to participate.
The initiative also underlines the importance of understanding the risks associated with AI alongside its potential applications. As AI tools become increasingly common in education and everyday communication, the ability to distinguish reliable information from manipulated or misleading content is becoming an important digital skill.
NCERT said the module aims to help students become informed, confident, creative and responsible users of technology. It reinforces the principle that human judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility must remain central to learning, even as AI becomes more widely used.
